The ocean floor. How science and technology bring this distant place closer.

70 percent of the Earth is covered by the sea and 95 percent of its habitat is located in the volume between the sea floor and the water surface. Nevertheless, it is the most unknown part of the world and exploring it is often compared to venturing into outer space. But for a few years now, thanks to technological progress, this has been changing: diving robots are collecting more and more data, which are then fed into AI systems. Every dive brings new answers, but also questions, and to follow up on these, engineers and scientists have to work closely together to develop new devices from scratch. Michaela Vieser talks to experts who are exploring this place.

Echo Academy

ECHO Academy, a five-day program empowering young creatives to tackle urgent societal issues through art and culture. ECHO—a European initiative led by DE/MO (NL) with partners from Germany, Greece, Spain, and Bulgaria—focuses on themes such as AI, climate change, biodiversity, democracy, and migration. In Berlin, our spotlight is on ecology and biodiversity, exploring how artistic practices can raise awareness and inspire action around the restoration and protection of our natural world.

Public Art Lab collaboration with the University of Europe for Applied Sciences, are bringing together 20 visionary students—artists, designers, and researchers—who will dive deep into ecological challenges and develop campaign concepts that reconnect people with nature.

Each day of the Academy is shaped by a leading voice in the field, offering diverse perspectives on ecology and creative activism:

  • Isaac Yuen, a biologist and writer known for his nature essays and environmental storytelling, will guide participants in exploring ecological narratives.

  • Michaela Vieser, author and cultural historian, will offer tools from nature writing to frame biodiversity loss in personal and poetic ways.

Fertile Void

The workshop “Quantum World Building" led by Michaela Vieser will engage participants in exploring the laws of the quantum world through looking at parallel presences, tangible and intangible worlds that cross distances of light-years. We will go beyond the safe space of certainty and hopefully find portals for stories that enable us to bring something back from these explorations. The session includes a guided walk, awareness exercises, writing prompts and discussions and will allow time for thoughtful reflection and creative writing.
